Recently, Alberto Garcia participated in a joint discussion group made up of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the San Antonio Black Lawyers Association, and the San Antonio Chapter of the Mexican American Bar Association, of which Mr. Garcia is treasurer. The organization Communities Organized For Fairness Equality and Empowerment (C.O.F.F.E.E., born after the recent Starbucks scandal) hosted the discussion named "A Dialogue on Explicit and Implicit Bias - A Dedication to Diversity and Inclusion" as part of the 109th Annual NAACP Convention, the first held in San Antonio.

Disseminating factual information and not popular exaggeration was a main goal of the event. The participants sought to inform and discuss ways all of our communities could come together and foster inclusion, equality, and empowerment. Mr. Garcia's principal talking points were entitled "The Border" and focused on the current state of immigration and immigration law, and how that impacts our community. He spoke on the following points:

  • National Security: actual statistics vs. media rhetoric
  • Current influx of immigrants at the border is a humanitarian crisis
    • Women and children fleeing violence
    • Governments not protecting its people
  • Current asylum laws
  • Process of entering the United States
    • Legal Permanent Residency based on
      • Family
      • Employment (only high skilled workers)
      • Special Immigrant
      • Victim of domestic violence
      • Victim of crime/human trafficking

The discussion ended with a call to action that included donating to responsible assistance organizations and volunteering to help. Here is a list of organizations that are focusing on the current problem of reuniting parents and children when the parents were detained: Border Parent/Child Separation Crisis

RGP thanks C.O.F.F.E.E., the NAACP, MALDEF, and MABA for opening the dialogue to make our communities stronger through diversity.
